The gibbous Moon near Jupiter for a very close conjunction on the evening of January 21, 2013, taken in early evening after the end of twilight but of course with a bright moonlit sky. The Moon is the bright overexposed spot — just above it is Jupiter, just visible in the glow of light around the Moon. The Plieades is at upper right, Orion at centre, and Sirius is just rising. This is a composite of two exposures both at ISO 400, one 13 seconds long at f/2.8 and a short 1 second exposure to better record Jupiter near the Moon. The compositing and masking does yield the appearance of a small halo around the Moon. Taken with the Canon 5D MkII and 16-35mm lens. This was a bitterly cold night, -18°C and with a wicked east wind blowing.
